The Hebrew word debir means “that which lies behind”. Etymologically it would be “the back room of a house” and was used in the domestic language. When the Temple in Jerusalem was built, it came to designate the main room, the Holy of Holies, where the Ark of the Covenant was kept. This double connotation of debir —on the one hand, that which is veiled and, on the other, the sacred place where the divine Presence manifests itself— evokes the human interior because of its unconscious and mysterious dimension, and also because it is a sanctuary and dwelling place of God. In this way, the Debir of the Temple is the metaphor for the debir of the interior of the human being.
